THE VIBE: MONTHLY JAZZ NIGHTS AT HISAM

The Vibe is moving to the second Friday of each month in 2022! Join us on February 11th for the latest installment of The Vibe, a monthly jazz series held at the Hawai‘i State Art Museum, in partnership with the Dae Han Ensemble.

**Please note that proof of vaccination or a negative Covid test (from an authorized testing provider, no home tests) will be required to attend the event, and masks will be required indoors**

This month’s featured guests are Clay Campania and Arthur Davis!

Clay Campania

Clay Campania, front man of the band, Friends of Adam, is a veteran of the music scene in Hawai‘i and Texas and has toured across the US. John Berger, journalist for the Honolulu Star Advertiser writes, “Campania is a competent vocalist and impressive on guitar; most important, he sounds like he is singing from his heart rather than trying to be a “blues singer.” John Heckathorn, editor for Honolulu Magazine, “When Campania picks up his guitar, he channels Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan.” Campania and his band have opened for many acts; Aerosmith, Sheryl Crow, Pablo Cruise, Darby Slick, Los Lonely Boys. After being a Austin favorite for 8 years, Clay moved back to Hawai‘i and brought with him a new, matured sound, a mix of gospel, blues, R&B, jazz and soul.

Arthur Davis

Arthur Davis grew up in O’ahu, Hawai’i, playing the trombone since the age of 14. Arthur was a member of the University of Hawai’i Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Mr. Reggie Padilla, who took Arthur’s exposure to jazz literature to another level. In 2014, Reggie invited Arthur to a recording session for Mike Love’s album “Love Will Find A Way.” A few years after that session, Mike Love invited Arthur to play in his band with Reggie which later became Mike Love and the Full Circle. Throughout recent years since 2016 Arthur has gone on tour with Mike Love playing big festivals including the Cali Roots Festival in Monterey CA, the Beloved Festival in Tidewater OR, the Shangri-La festival in Geneva MN, the Woodford Folk Festival in Queensland Australia, and many others. Arthur has also been a guest musician playing trombone for various local bands, notably Funkshun and Funk Vision. In 2014, Arthur performed with the Doo-Wop band, The Love Notes, while opening for Bruno Mars’ Moonshine Tour at the Blaisdell Arena. Arthur has also recorded trombone on Paula Fuga’s recent album Rain on Sunday.

Dae Han

On the drums, Dae Han’s swift, technical style compliments every situation, from jazz and funk to R&B, reggae, and hip hop. Dae Han is the unsung backbone behind progressive Honolulu acts and international artists. He’s the go-to drummer whenever Japanese rapper Shing02 tours the US and Asia with a full band. In 2019, Takuya Kuroda tapped Dae to organize a band to support the Brooklyn-based trumpeter’s gig at Blue Note Hawaii. Dae also recently teamed up with guitarist Gilbert Batangan and bassist Mark Tanouye to open for Khruangbin. Every year he organizes an always impressive jazz-forward tribute to the late J Dilla.
