Free, family-friendly evening of art and music at HiSAM. All museum galleries and the Sculpture Garden will be open. Come visit the exhibits and enjoy performances in the garden! December’s First Friday is also the last day to view the Honolulu Triennial exhibits before they close. Admission is free and all ages are welcome. Honolulu Art Ensemble
Honolulu Art Ensemble is Hawaii’s leading exponent of experimental Open Flow music. Free of traditional structure and form, Open Flow improvisation draws upon countless elements of world music with complete spontaneity, inspired by the collective energies of the performers and their surrounding audience.
“We are a group of professionally trained and internationally experienced, jazz-based musicians performing as a quintet ensemble. We perform in ‘open flow’/free jazz style – spontaneously improvised music including not only our core instrumentation with electric guitar, drums, acoustic bass, congas, and trumpet/flugelhorn, but also with a variety of hand-held instruments, blending genres including jazz, world music, classical, and other influences. At times, we also include a vocalist, dancers, and poetry readings against the backdrop of the music. We have also performed in tandem with video or film works and artistic lighting installations.”

UHM Department of Theatre & Dance
The UHM Department of Theatre and Dance shares “DANCE. NOW.” in the Sculpture Garden and the Mirror Room at First Friday on December 2.
Enjoy an evening of Hula, Okinawan Dance, Balinese Dance, Philippine Dance, Korean Dance, Ballroom, Contemporary, Ballet, Hip Hop, Queer Dance, Creative Dance, and Bollywood performed by students from UHM Dance Courses in the Sculpture Garden from 6:00pm – 8:00pm.
The Mirror Room features a dancinema collection of dance for camera works and live media performance installations created by the screendance course at 6:00pm, 7:00pm, and 8:00pm.
